Motorizing the Santa Fe Engine using RC

I'm fairly new to Lego and its multitude of varieties. I'm primarily interested in the train sets and the buildings of the City series. I recently purchased an unmotorized version of the Santa Fe engine 10020 and would like to energize it.

I understand that it was originally designed to operate on the 9V system but the rest of my trains (not to mention the track) are all RC. Is there enough space within the engine framework to accomodate the RC controller and battery pack? Has anyone else done this who would like to share their secrets? Any and all help will be greatfully appreciated!
