Nice to get some more dragons! Ninjago has had a great track record with dragons lately. Next year's theme seems to involve sky pirates, which sounds exciting. Beyond that, not a whole lot to speculate on. There was an interview with the TV show's writers which drops some small hints, including a pic of next year's Skybound Flag.

It's interesting that the Ninjago movie sets are still on next year's roster when the movie itself has been pushed back to fall 2017.... that worries me a bit since it suggests LEGO was not prepared for the movie being delayed.

I think these names have probably been picked up using the URL trick from paperballpark. I'm not sure if it tells you anything about release date, just that they are in the database. So the sets might still be delayed if the movie is delayed.

Funny how they are only making Cole's and Jay's dragon. When I saw how many there were at the end of season 4, I half hoped for some giant dragon collector pack or something.

For all we know, some of the summer sets might include other dragons. I'd love for Nya to get a dragon now that she's a ninja. And Lloyd also hasn't had a new dragon since 2013 when he was the golden ninja. Now that he's back to being the green ninja it'd be nice for him to get a new one.

I guess that Lloyd rode that one, yeah. I wasn't counting it because he was possessed at the time, so while it was his body it wasn't really "Lloyd" in control.

A dragon for under 10? Not sure it will trouble the current dragon line up.

Thanks @CM4S, hope this is ok then we can see more of your great pictures for other themes as well. My guess would be that it is ok as long as Lego don't ask for it to be taken down. You get a good idea of what this will look like and its looking good.

That figure's got her hair, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's just a placeholder and the hair in the final set might be a different color. The bone in the hair makes me question whether it'd be Toxikita, as it doesn't seem to fit her "style"... unless it's just a part of a pirate-themed makeover.

From the descriptions I've heard, the figures in these photos in general were fairly preliminary, reusing a lot of older parts and decorations without a lot of rhyme or reason. So I wouldn't read too much into them.

I know a lot of folks here on Brickset are only interested in Ninjago in terms of the sets and not the story. But for anybody who is interested, Cartoon Network has put up an episode list for the upcoming season.

The first two episode titles seem consistent with the sneak peek that was shown at the SDCC Ninjago panel, which showed the ninja on the run from the law. The spelling of the third, "Enkrypted", suggests to me that we'll end up revisiting Kryptarium Prison. Which might be where the ragtag bunch of misfits that make up next year's mix-and-match pirate crew hails from. We've already seen that many of the ninja's past foes were locked up there, so I think that seems plausible.

Key visual for next year! From the LEGO Ninjago Facebook page.

There hasn't been a whole lot of story discussion here, but somebody on Eurobricks found this activity book listing on Amazon that describes the story: "A powerful djinn called Nadakhan has been brought to Ninjago and is rounding up his crew of sky pirates to take over the island. The ninja must stop the invasion before the powerful djinn turns all their wishes into nightmares."

@shib just start another "chessboard" :-P

I do really love how Ninjago has constantly reinvented itself.  My nephews are crazy for it right now, as are a colleague's two boys. (I've acted as a go-between for them for trading stickers for the Ninjago sticker album!)
I think Sky Pirates will be a big hit with the little chaps and if they keep making cool sets with interesting parts they'll be a hit with me too.

I've been keeping up with some of the themes I follow on Google Trends lately to see how they're doing. Today I happened to compare Ninjago with some other big themes and I was quite intrigued with the results. First of all, looking at Ninjago individually, its search interest is nearly back to where it was when it peaked in late 2012 (when what was originally meant to be the series finale aired, and rumors were circulating that the theme might be ending).

However, if we compare Ninjago search interest to LEGO City and LEGO Star Wars search interest, things get even more interesting. Apparently, search interest for LEGO Ninjago has been stronger than search interest for either of those other two themes since the start of this year. Also, it's had stronger mid-year (June and July) search interest than these themes every year since 2012 — even during its 2013–2014 slump.

Now obviously, I know the new Star Wars episode will be HUGE for the LEGO Star Wars theme, possibly bringing it to heights it hasn't seen since May 2003 when Episode III came out. But when you consider that Star Wars and City are regularly the LEGO Group's two strongest themes, it's interesting that Ninjago has presently surpassed them in at least this one respect.

It will be interesting to see where things stand when we see next year's annual report. How much of this search interest will translate into actual sales for each of these themes? Is there more that the LEGO Group could or should be doing to turn this online engagement with the Ninjago brand into money for the company?

This year Ninjago got a D2C set for ages 14+, and next year it's getting Juniors sets for ages 4–7. Both of these things help capitalize on audiences outside the typical Ninjago set's 7–14 age bracket. Judging from some of the comments I've seen here on Brickset from parents whose 4– and 5-year-olds already love LEGO Ninjago, the Juniors sets in particular could be a good move for the theme.

Another step I'd like to see the LEGO Group take is to try and boost Ninjago sales with girls. Ninjago was conceived and developed primarily as a boy-oriented franchise, but according to this interview from last year, around 30% of the show's viewers at that time were female. This is also reflected in what I've seen on sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr, where female Ninjago fans have a huge presence. Now, I'm obviously not advocating for LEGO to release Ninjago sets based on the mini-doll, as cute as that might be. Consistent branding is pretty important, and character designs are a part of that. But I think it could be useful to look closely at what girls love about the TV series and whether that's being reflected in the actual product offerings.

We've recently seen some good steps in that regard, like bringing the ninja's dreamy action hero hair into the 2014 and 2015 sets, or creating LEGO versions of characters from the show like Dareth, Misako, and Zane's falcon. New female characters like Pixal, Skylor, and Bansha (the sets' first real female villain) have been introduced, and Nya, the series' lead female character, has started appearing in more sets and been promoted to a role as an actual ninja. A fan fiction contest was even held this year on the LEGO Message Boards, and the two winning stories (both by girls) will be published in an upcoming Scholastic chapter book. But I still think there's probably a lot more that could be done to get girls buying, playing, and building with Ninjago sets.

Anyway, I've rambled long enough about this!

as was said before, ninjago constantly reinvent itself. this is not really the case for city and star wars, and you know more or less what to expect each year. it may explain why more searches are done on ninjago

It's probably not very accurate to compare City based on searches. In the general consumer sense, City is not a brand like Ninjago and Star Wars. An ill-informed (or simply inattentive) parent might search for only "lego" when trying to find City, whereas they would likely use the brand name for the other two. This goes the other way, too. I expect a lot of kids refer to their City sets as LEGO and their Ninjago sets as Ninjago.
