Set. 31050: Corner Deli plan to turn it in to a modular building MOC.

ok after seeing a Video on youtube of someone MOC-ing 2 sets of the  31026: Bike Shop & Cafe, in to modular building's
i got the idea to do this with set 31050: Corner Deli
i would like to only end up using 2 set's to do this but have already admitted to myself i may need 3.
i was planing to get 3 of this any how one to build the set, and 2 for the MOC.

anyhow,
it not as easy as it sound's
i have copy all the part in to LDD and am now building in it,
i already scraped 2 layout as not working.

i would like to hear your view on this idea, and any advise, you have for me be nice to.

Well to be honest, they are only 40 USD, and also will likely be put on sale by retailers in the US at some point. So I would say wait until then and buy 3 to do your MOC mod.
Even at full price 3 of these at 120 USD should be enough to build a decent MOC mod and still be cheaper than an actual 'modular' building, especially now that the Bank is 169.99 USD.
Sorry realized you are in the UK after posting, so substitute the amount for local currency :-)
    Good luck!

Dont do that!... you had me think the uk Price had jumped up on Brick Bank.

let not get in to the UK V USA price's

any how yes there are just enough 1x2, 1x4 and 1x6 bricks to build a 2 color 1 level building. well it not the same high at the pet shop ground level. it is 2 brick levels off that high.unless i use 4 set's i dont think i can pull of a 2 level build. i plan to have tables outside, it looks like most of the items in this set are 1x1 or 1x2, in size. the problem's come when you have to build them big side walls' this set got a lot of windows, and it is them that make up a good part of the build.
still what i have done with only 2 set's is quite good. would be a lot faster if i had the set's them self. but that is week's away. other stuff come 1st.
think i let it sit there for now and think on some ider's.
i already used some new ways of building i picked up with pet shop.

If you can post pics once you are done that would be great.
Sorry about the whole USD Vs Pound/Euro thing.
I think in any case this is a somewhat good value for its cost as a standalone set. Would imagine it looks fairly good with two (or three) of the deli sets combined as a 'mod' type building

will do, i have a nice little app on my LDD pc that i can Render pic's from the LDD file's
i think i going to have to use 3 set's it not going to work with just the 2,
if i try to do a up sized copy of the little build, then i may have to try 4 set's,
4 set's it the limit i will try this with. that is  £111.96 for 4 set's and Brick Bank is £119.99. so i relay do not wish to do 4 set's for just one Modular Building Build.
pet shop is 2 building for £119.99 and this will be smaller, so.......
    Brain Wave!!!!!
i just had a Cracking Idea....
not going to make a big help with wall's but it will help..
    so off to LDD again.

New plan, i was trying to build a 16x32 Moc, but i think i can pull off the upsizing better with a 32x32 Moc, i will keep and finish the 16x32 build file, but i going to try for the 32x32 build and 4 set's now sounds ok for the size of the set to build.

    ok sapping that idea,
a 32x32 will not work as i dont have the parts to make a the footpath.
and i trying to to buy brick on pick a brick for this, so back to the 16x32
only this time with 3 set's.

Think laterally. Only LEGO footpaths don't have potholes and enough "street furniture" to make them obstacle courses. Add a bit of realism.

    @TigerMoth
with the 32x32, i think i would need 5 copys of the set, as i was using a lot of 1x1 brick's just to get the right high for the ground level on a 16x32. it dont show on this model but the 2nd Brick level down from the top is all 1x1 or 1x2
after it was all done i had about 3 1x1 and 1 1x2 Brick left for this brown color.

ok i have Got the ground level of the Deli done.
before you see the picks i have used 3 types and color brick that are not in the Corner Deli set, one is the Medium Blue 2x2 flat tile from the pat shop Build that by the time i get round to making this will be free to use as i will have finished the pet shop Mod to a Lego store by that time, the 2nd is the 1x2 Brick with hole for the linking of set's. the 3rd is a 1x1 flat tile from my spear parts tub. for the Medium Stone Gray eage to the footpath
all other part used have come from the Deli set X3.

so here are some pic's or you.

please Note that this is just the outside of the build, and no inside's have been done yet

looking at this pic, i can see that i will have to change the doors to open the other way.
there is also the option of swapping 1 of the 2 door's for 4 more black windows.

and the back of the Moc.
as you can see this is what it would look like if i swaped the door for more windows only it would be in back.

right now this is just the back bone of the build. all the little bit will come later
after i got the 2nd level done.

idea's on how to add a way to get to the 2nd level would be good, the deli set come with 2 Lattice 1x4x6, but i dont think that work work here.

nice. So you ran out of pieces? Nothing left to make something inside as well?

Also, can you please send me the link to the 2 x Bike Shop modular moc? Can`t seem to find it. Thanks

    @arathemis
i will pm you the link, when i find it. i know who did it so it should not tack long to do

re pieces left over 3 set's end up being 1400 pieces
the model is using 770 odd part right now.
i have yet to do the inside of the model it is on my list,
as it will be April before i can pick up the set's for this mod, i have time to take my time doing this build in LDD

I think this is the video for the Bike Shop and Cafe -

@chrisalddin - You really need three sets of Corner Deli for this when you have 1400 pieces left over? Wouldn't be cheaper to buy 2 and Brinklink the rest? I don't know myself as I've never tried to MOC a modular.

I have seen posts here of people just BL'ing modulars. Can anybody ballpark the cost on just sourcing the parts for something like Green Grocer or Grand Emporium? Is it still cheaper to Brinklink the parts than pay $400+ on Ebay? I'm assuming one would also run into the issue of just never being able to get certain (or enough) parts.

maybe @chrisalddin can confirm, but I think the challenge is to use the sets themselves-and no other sets/parts- to build the mod MOC. This could explain why three sets are needed.

    @flord
3 set's = 1400 pieces in all ( NOT the pieces left over,)
i have not worked on the inside yet so there are well over 600 pieces left to use to build the inside with. little of what is left over are bricks

the challenge, is to build a modular building "Deli themed shop" MOC of the corner deli on a 16x32 base plate. trying to use the pieces from 3 set's and only pulling part's from my spare's when i have no choice. like the footpath i had to use the 8x "2x2 medium blue tiles". as well as trying to keep the same feel of the official Model. (not easy as there are not a lot of Bricks even in 3 set's to build a modular building type build with). i still may use other parts from my spare parts, or order some if i have to, but ordering parts for this build is a last resort.

right now all my build work is in LDD as i have yet to get the set's. if i keep with the buying plan i have right now (unlikely to happen as i end up changing that plan almost daily at this time.) it will be 28/4/2016 before i can order the 3 set's that i will need and the 16x32 base plate (i do have a base plate i could use, but i like to keep that plate for other stuff as them are handy to have around.
  • chrisalddinchrisalddin UKMember Posts: 2,669
also, any pieces left over from the 3 set's after all is said and done will go to my still slowly growing spare parts collection.

I don't have any of the creators sets like this. I only have a couple modulars. How do they look side by side? are the scales similar or off? I like thew Deli and was just wondering if I can just stick a couple pins in the side to attach it.

right out of the box? following lego how to build?
No. there is not any thing to stop you do just what you said only it will be way smaller.
it will need more then 1 set and a rebuild.
    i work out you need 3 set's
i dont have one of the samll modulars set yet,
so i not seen one side by side,
at some point i will build one next to the Moc i am working on in my LDD file.
sorry i am not of more help.

Others may know better than I, but generally the single modulars like Pet Shop have a 16x16 stud footprint. The 3 in 1s like the Bike Shop measure at about 12x10 or somewhere thereabouts. They are not as wide nor as deep. Lastly, the 3 in 1s are somewhere around 2/3s the height of a modular, which vary from set to set anyway.

Pet shop set is made up of 2x 16x32 base plates
of witch only the back of the plate is not used (it a bit of green at the back ) maybe it's a garden?

as far as i can tell the the deli and bike shop set's would work well with City set's for size. like set #60097 there about that size.

^---I think that is a good point to remember I think. The Creator 'city' type sets like Bike and Cafe shop, toy and grocery shop and this Deli are all 'modulars' on a budget. So while dad and mom may have the 'big' mods, kids can easy have a city section for their smaller displays.

i think you have it the nail on the head,
how about we call them City modulars,

up-sizing the model is not easy, as the model do not have a lot to the inside of it,
i may have to look at other model to get ideas of how to full the space up,
still i am over the moon on how i got stairs in to the build

That looks great! Would be a good building to put on the dodge of a modular display, decreasing the height before ending completely.

I think about 50 pieces.  The pieces he used not part of the sets were some gray flat 6 x 12 for the second floor's floor and the tall tan pieces to help make up the wall by the stairs and the interior wall of the first floor.

One other thing to point out is that these 3n1 Creator sets are nowhere near the detail of a Modular. While you can most certainly build a "modular" building out of 3 sets, it will look awfully plain next to a real Modular set. Also, there is much more value in buying a Modular than buying several Creator sets to make a modular building. You would have to buy 5 Corner Deli's to get the piece total of current Modulars. When it is all said and done, you are paying $30-40 USD (depending on the Modular) more for 5 Corner Deli's than 1 Modular.

I'll be buying corner deli when I find them at 30-50% off. Then I will be buying several of them myself as the creator line is by far my favorite in general.

That is a huge advantage these type of Creator sets have over Modulars here in the US; since there are no discounts on exclusives here.

Compared to the other Modulars, it does. If it stays on the end, it doesn't look bad, even though it is small. It still looks out of place. If you are shooting for plain and simple; then you you are on the right track ;)

@ryjay Your son did a great job with the set btw. I am not knocking his attempt; I would be hard pressed to do any better :)

Honest.....out of place/scale.   Need to double existing size to compete with the modulars.

Depends on which 3n1. You would need 3 sets for Corner Deli, while Bike Shop at over a 1000 pieces can be done mostly with 2. I would disagree about the level of detail though. Compared to the newest Creator sets like Brick Bank or the Ghostbusters HQ, yes they aren't as detailed, but you don't have to go to far back to find sets like Pet Shop (house side) or Grand Emporium that are pretty sparse on the inside.

What 3n1s do have going for them is that they are carried in stores (at least where I live) and go on sale 2 or 3 times a year, while modulars are not. To me the value for money is there if you catch it at the right time.

Someone else here on the forum said it would be nice if Lego would sell a "living room" set or "office set" add-on in a polybag to give the option of making these buildings more detailed. I think it's a great idea.

When I was talking about detail; I was referring to the exterior. I think the general consensus in the forum is that people would rather have bigger and more detailed Modular Buildings than a fully furnished and detailed interior.

Another question to ask is: Are most of the parts in the 3n1 sets useful enough to build at the same scale as the Modulars? Is it reallyy as easy as buying 2 or even 3 Creators 3n1's?

As mentioned above; what the 3n1's have going for it is that you can find them easier than Modulars in stores and they can be had for a discount.

I am building a modular from the Cafe and Bike Shop from Black Friday...but only because of the price But I am incorporating A LOT of my own pieces to justify a true Modular. It should be good when it is done. And it is impressive for the people who only use the pieces in the set, but that isn't how I work I guess. I want what I need with nothing extra left over. (Although I'll take the leftovers in the box, no problem).

I am definitely NOT discouraging anyone from doing this, in fact, I am going to buy a couple of the Corner Deli if I can find them at 30-50% discount. I just think it doesn't stand up to the more detailed Modulars. To be fair, the pet shop side of the "Pet Shop" Modular is rather plain except for the roof.

AND they can be discounted, even in the US! I rarely buy a non mod Creator minifig set at RRP, they are still overpriced IMO BUT they are at least discounted many times at outlets like Amazon. I will say that Deli seems to be good value even at its RRP though.
