Suggestion for Christmas

Hey Huw and team,

a suggestion for december: usually you select set/theme of the year with a few chosen specialists. It's great - but what about putting it out for a general vote:

Round 1: Two first weeks every can vote for their favorite theme of the year + 5 favorite sets.

Round 2: Next two weeks people can vote amoung the top choosen themes and sets from round 1.

I know it might take a bit of programing, but I would be great fun.

Thanks for the DB! Love it :-)

I like this idea but I think it would need some clever working to be anything other than a bunch of people clicking 'I like Star Wars' and 'I like the biggest, most expensive sets'. Maybe favorite licensed theme and favorite non-licensed theme or having price range categories to keep things interesting.

'Worst/most disappointing' could also be interesting as there have been quite a few duds this year.

@drdavewatford does this on his website, http://gimmelego.blogspot.co.uk/ with awards each year, and the public can vote for the best set.

I think Brickset normally links to his site when the public vote launches, but I could be mistaken.

I think in past years the contributors to the main page have choosen sets in various categories/price points as suggestions for presents in the run up to Christmas.

Have there really? From what I've saw, we were just ripping the Toy Shop until the Batcave came out, and then ripped that until Insult on Hoth came out, and then put that aside as we ripped the Death Star making another production run. Looking at this year's sets the only other major dud was the Heartlake Rollercoaster. The negativity is just an exaggeration.

Don't forget about the Technic fans ripping the Porsche, and the Train fans ripping the Winter train. It seems that the biggest critics of sets are also the biggest fans of those themes...

^ A fair observation but doesn't really apply to the Winter Train as it appears to have been generally well received by fans of the Winter Village theme.  As it stands, TLG only give train fans something to complain/ drool over every three years or so...

I think there were enough to make an interesting discussion. The season holiday sets like the vampire and pilgrim models were met with a mix of interest and most of the comments on the TRU Bricktober packs were negative. I didn't find anything this year to be so bad I questioned its existence (The Iron Man golf cart and Spider tricycle from a few years back were that bad) but there are always going to be sets that are disappointing to some degree.
