The Wonderful World of Disney LEGO!

LostInTranslationLostInTranslation UKMember Posts: 5,154
Basically, this is a general thread for discussing anything Disney related, but I didn't want to call it that because "General" threads don't seem to be very well received :-)

We do already have threads for the Disney CMFs and The Disney Castle 71040, but I envisage this thread as a place to discuss Disney themed sets (past, present and future), share Disney MOCs and custom made characters, and just generally talk about the relationship between Disney and LEGO. Not really intending to include Marvel or Star Wars here as those themes already have their own threads.

I've had this draft saved for ages but today seems like a good day to post it following the Disney discussion in the leaks thread @shib ;-)
@CapnRex101 is there any chance of merging some of the Disney comments there into this thread?

Anyway, I'm still holding out hope for Snow White, Tiana, Pocahontas or Mulan to appear in the second summer Disney set that we don't have info on as yet.

I wonder if the change in branding from Disney Princesses to just Disney might open the door for other content.

Having seen Moana (which has a very clear "I am not a princess" statement - even if she basically is) I suspect it's probably more to do with Disney's plans than LEGO's, but it's nice to consider the possibilities.

I would love for there to be Disney minifig-based sets.  I just can't get fully behind the mini-dolls, no matter how well received they might be by their target market.

Is it just me, or does Pixar seem to be an untapped source of material?  I know we've had Toy Story and Cars (and the one Brave set), but they have had so many great movies - sets based on The Incredibles, Up, Wall-e, even Finding Nemo (a brick built reef would be so cool with all the various shapes and colors).

I think the original Incredibles predates LEGO doing Disney sets, but with Incredibles 2 around the corner it's possible there could be a tie in with that.

Finding Nemo/Dory I was think would be restricted by the fact that a reef or an aquarium isn't very distinct to the film. Something like a brick built Mr Ray could be cool if done well, but would have limited appeal, especially with the film being less relevant than the current films.

I'm pretty sure Brave only got a set because it was part of the Princess merchandise line, and allowed for something a bit different to the other princess characters - part of me actually thinks there could have been a slot allocated for either Brave or Mulan (which my phone is determined to correct to Milan!) and the Brave one was chosen for design/marketing reasons.

Also on Pixar don't forget there was Wall-e, even if that was only because of Ideas.

I think I'd be happy to learn of future Disney CMF series more than anything else, scene can be created easier than some of the distinctive figures :-)

I agree with @natro220, Pixar sets have been (in my opinion, since coming out of my dark ages), underwhelming. Maybe they wanted to test the market with the CMFs and the castle, or maybe the revenue wouldn't be what they want, so they don't license as much (maybe LEGO keeps too much, who knows).

I think Incredibles, more than Cars, has the biggest opportunity for amazing sets, especially considering how Incredibles would actually have minifigures, and there is only so much you can do with car characters.

I know some view Disney as an evil corporate giant, but they have a big place in my heart. It was really the Disney CMF series that brought me out of my dark ages.

I've loved Pixar since they introduced Toy Story 1 and have followed them closely ever since. I would LOVE to see sets or minifigs from their movies. I doubt their new 2017 film Coco would be the tipping point for a Pixar-Lego set, but I think some Day of the Dead Lego sets would be outrageous and would likely connect with the market well.

Is it only speculation that there will be a second Disney CMF line, or has that been confirmed anywhere?

I have never really liked Mickey Mouse and his chums. For some reason they give me the creeps. The older films and classic characters I also find a bit meh. Cinderella, Aurora and Snow White and that lot are just so sappy.I have never quite understood the obsession the rest of the world has, especially small girls who sometimes seem to just live and breathe for all that pink!  I have two of the Disney Princess sets - the one that came free with the Daily Mail and one I got recently from a charity shop that has a little yellow dog with it. I think it's a beauty parlour. But what is weird is despite all this meh-ness I have for Disney Princess, I really like them. I just think they're cute. It's the type of sets I would of loved when I was a kid. I would prefer to see more Pixar sets. But please not to much Mickey Icky Mouse!

I have always presumed Disney is driving the direction these sets go, with Lego able to give some ideas and input, but Disney is the one that okays it.  With the name change, yes, I am also hoping for more than just Disney princess. I also wonder if the success of the Disney minifigs made Disney/Lego rethink what sets they could put out there that would sell.

I would really love to see the continuation of a large themed Disney set every year or two, and think they would sell.

I have seen in other doll brands, that sadly dolls of color too often have fewer sales. I think that is part of the delay for characters like Mulan, Pocohantas, Tiana. In general Elsa/Anna, Ariel, Cinderella are going to be huge sellers, so they are going to focus on those first and foremost. The fact that Disney/Lego put out another ice castle just shows how much power Frozen has still. My 12 year old saw it today, and wants it, despite having the first castle, and the spring castle, and every other Frozen Lego set. I would enjoy seeing Snow White, but honestly, only if it include the dwarves, which they really could not do before now.

I'm not a Disney Princess fan (except, you know, for Leia), but the movies are actually good for what they are, and honestly, Sleeping Beauty has an amazing third act, and Enchanted is extremely fun and entertaining (can we have some of those characters as CMFs Disney?). Although to be fair, sometimes the old Disney (and WB) cartoons can be somewhat scary.

Hopefully with all the pro-strong women movies Disney is making (I'm glad they are...Rey is example #1) LEGO can take advantage of it and appeal to the biggest demographic of them all, women (well, girls) and not just with 'girly' themes such as Friends and Elves (not that I would complain since I only consume them when they're on sale and clearance).

Speculation is fine for me. I have been avoiding the leaks thread as I don't want to know about stuff before lego announce it. The opening post asked for info from the leaks thread to be merged into here.

Is that going to be a movie like Batman vs Superman?  Would love to see them battling it out on the big screen.  Ariel would win easy.  Never mess with a redhead.

@bendybadger depends on where the fight takes place. If it's in water then Ariel wins. If it's on land Snow White wins. But they will both find out that in a Disney movie your parents are dead, and then they will kiss and make up.

The Carbuncle is Disney's mascot. He's a good guy though. Even chose the form of a certain mouse as not to scare people. What a guy!

Probably because the usual Disney line is "It doesn't matter what happens, everything will be fine at the end. And we'll make tons of cash by getting your kids to whine about wanting X, Y and Z." So no different to any large corporation that wants to own your kids' lives.

So what are everyone's thoughts on the Maui bigfig...I like him but there are three things that bother me. 1)He needs tatoos on his back 2) He needs a necklace 3)Some printing on his grass skirt would be nice.

I was really surprised to see a bigfig in the Disney (or for that matter girls') range.
  • MooreFXMooreFX CaliforniaMember Posts: 40
More tattoos would have been nice. I bought both sets. I loved the movie. I like both of Moana's outfits.  Both sets were fun to build and think about the movie.

I like the new Frozen Ice Palace too, snowgies especially.  I am glad I waited and didn't get the first one.  Anna's hair is really nice too.  I haven't picked this set up yet, as have spent too much already this year.
  • ShibShib UKMember Posts: 4,256
Maui could have been done better. I think the shorts instead of a grass skirt bothers me more than not having enough tattoos. I realise that this is most likely because of the way the big figs are moulded but it makes his lower half look completely wrong compared to the upper half just lacking detail.

one thing that I've found odd about the Princesses line is that with the introduction of the Palace Pet Pals LEGO have done sets with pets that they haven't done the corresponding character for. E.g the raccoon in #41142 I think is meant to go with Pocahontas, who hasn't appeared in a set.

@snowhitie - surely there's no contest between Belle and Mulan in a straight up fight, Mulan's the only Disney Princess with a body count ;-)

now Mulan vs Merida would be a fight worth watching :-P

Ta :-) was in a bit of a silly mood while hanging around waiting this morning.

slightly more on topic (and connected to the silliness) - I've been rewatching a few Disney films lately mainly as a result of watching Once Upon a Time. Last night I was watching Brave and it got me thinking as to how the mover from Disney Princesses to just Disney could lead to different sets.

In all honesty I doubt there would be another Brave set, but I did think that it would be great if they did a minifig based set based on the stone circle with a black bear (for Queen Eleanor) and a King Fergus figure (probably something like Axl from Nexo)- potentially reuse the kiddie bear mounds and have a Merida minifig.

I'm thinking that future Disney sets will likely still focus on new releases and more Princesses/Frozen rehashes more than anything else from the Disney Classics.

I've still got a boxset of OUAT season five to watch. Must get round to that soon.

I would love the Disney theme to branch out to non Princesses - Alice in Wonderland would be an obvious hit, I think Peter Pan would be good too (and these would reuse some of the existing CMF moulds) and some sets with animal characters like the Jungle Book or Zootopia would also be great.
My dream is for a Lego Kuzco (llama), Kronk and Yzma but that's probably too niche.

The Emperor's New Groove does have something of a cult following for one of the lesser known Disney films so I could definitely imagine Kuzco in a CMF series, I think Kronk with the Yzma carriage backpack with the glider, Patcha and Llama Kuzco with a little cart would make a cracking little set, but that seems like a dream.

l'd say that a Jungle Book set would be way more likely than an Emperors New Groove set but even then I don't imagine a Jungle Book set happening any time soon.

I've found Once Upon a Time a very mixed bag. It seemed like something changed at season four and the Disney reference became a bit on the nose and I've not enjoyed it as much as some of the earlier seasons. The first half of season four was basically just a retelling of Frozen.

I really liked the OUAT take on Peter Pan though, that made me rewatch the Disney film. Incidentally damn that is one very un-PC film. I remembered it had stereotypical "Indian" characters in but I'd forgotten just how far they went with it!

@shib off course! I do wonder how you knew I followed a workshop with Harrison Ford last week.

I haven't watched OUP yet, is it really good for Disney fans?

Keep being on the fence since the 5 min I saw were very dark. Maybe I should watch out for the DVD box.

Totally agree about branching out @LostInTranslation - here's hoping!

It's not a bad series but I really prefer the earlier series where the Disney references are far more subtle and it's more based on general Fairy Tales than specifically Disney characters. I'm working my way through it on Netflix at the minute and nearing the last of what's on there.

@snowhitie I quite like OUAT as fun, sometimes rather silly, escapism. There are lots of general fairytale and Disney shout outs and subversions. It's uneven in terms of quality as @shib says but some of the characters you just can't help but adore (Hook!). I don't think it's too dark really, but obviously for a show about the battle between the forces of good and evil (typical fairy tale stuff) you do have to have some heavier stuff at times. I'd say give it a chance, start from the beginning as its one of those shows with a lot of internal mythology.

Edit -  again like Shib I think sometimes they go too deep into particular characters (Frozen)  and make arcs last for too many episodes when shorter ones would be more satisfying. I agree that the Neverland arc was pretty good though.

I think Emperor's New Groove became kind of cult classic kind of a hit after the fact (I know it didn't do that well in the box office). It did spawn like 2 straight to DVD movies and a TV series. I would love if they released a bunch of sets based of older, non-princess themed movies. I know it's not universally loved, but the Disney cartoon version of Robin Hood was one of my favorites as a kid, and would make for great action scenes.
