UCS falcon rumours (that turned out to be true!)

landolando Member Posts: 83
edited September 1 in Collecting
now that I've saved up enough money to buy myself a brick linked UCS falcon. I hear rumours going about that a new re-release of the 10179 is to come out this year..
is it possible that this is true? And when would they be likely to announce this if true?
I'm guessing I'm not the only one wanting to know asap ha

I think it's good to have a thread for this rumor.

Here's what we know about it so far, from what I can remember

    1. Bound to be more expensive than the last
    2. Comes with 2 satellite dishes, one circular and one rectangular for TFA

At this point I think ISO's move is the smarter of the two options! There's now enough smoke coming from the right fires to comfortably believe a new Falcon is imminent. Of course, there's also no way to know if the new one will be an improvement over the last, or at the same scale.
All just personal opinion and speculation of course.

Regarding the price of a potential new UCS MF we could use the death star as a reasonable comparator. Both have a high piece count and are in the upper end of lego sets.10188 was released the year after 10179 and cost £275 back then. Its new variant costs £410 which is a 49% increase. It had very little design input required and some new box art. If you increase 10179's original price by 49% the new cost could be £521.50. The one thing we don't know is if Lego actually made money on the original or if it was just put out as a statement piece, much like high end car and hi-fi manufacturers do. Now that they are aware people are willing to drop very large sums on Lego sets they may well increase the price more. Of course they could do something inline with the new death star price but make it smaller than the original, but that would involve design work and development. All just speculation obviously, just my thoughts.

Look at it from a positive point of view, if the rumours of a new Falcon are true, you could by that, if it turns out to be too expensive, you could buy @iso3200's bricklinked Falcon, if it doesn't come out at all then the bricklinked version it is. Either way, if you have waited this long whilst saving to get hold of this beauty, another couple of months isn't going to do any harm.

also a new one could very well cause a dip in prices for the old one. Especially used/bricklinked copies.

There have been rumours / wishes for a re-release for years. You could wait three months, and if there is no definitive yes statement from Lego then there will still be rumours of it that are just as probable as now. So wait another three, and the situation is exactly the same. And another three. The only thing that will make the rumours go away is a definitive yes from Lego.

Yes true. Wish they would just say if they are re-releasing or not.

If there is one coming, I do hope it is a significantly different build, and hopefully with an interior - although I doubt they could fit a proper one in to keep height in scale with width and length without making it significantly bigger. Could the new one be bigger than the last one? I doubt it. I can't see TLG busting the £500 barrier just yet.

If the interior and the cockpit design are improved, I'm in.

I have two things I'm hoping for with a new version; 1. It's a close match in scale to the #75060 Slave I, & 2. It gets a redesign, looking at the original, the interior is lacking & cockpit is pretty awkwardly designed.

    3. May not exist.
    Hey!  That's my familiar refrain!

(Although @CM4S was ultimately correct on the newest version of the UCS Snowspeeder.  Much to my delight.)

As for a pricepoint - over $499.99 would be unprecedented.

^^ Point 1. You may have a hard decision there!  The UCS falcon 34.75m/ 80cm is ALREADY out of scale to the UCS Slave 21.5/ 43cm. So to match the Slave scale wise the new Falcon will need to be at least 10% smaller.

If it is pretty much a rehash of the original UCS Falcon, I'll have to think long & hard about getting it or grab another #75105 for the purpose of MOCing one to scale with Slave I instead (I have a #75105 already, but I'm wanting to use that for a few other MOCs).

I have a few VIP points waiting to spend which expire at the end of this year so I am hoping for a release this Autumn. If it comes in at a similar piece count then £499 would be the limit of what I would be prepared to pay for it.
With this year being the 40th anniversary of Star Wars it would make sense if they are considering it to do it this year although I can also see them maybe linking it in with the Han Solo movie.
I'm not convinced it is going to happen though. All we have so far is wishful thinking.

I spoke to a Lego employee (who will remain nameless) this week who said they had seen official confirmation but no images yet. Not going to say any more than that in case I get them in trouble.

As much as it would destroy the value of the sealed 10179 I'm sitting on I want this rumor to be real.  That said, the digging I did before buying 10179 showed these rumors happen every year around the same time and they have never panned out.  Not seeing anything any different than past rumors. Like the guy last year on another board who "is never wrong" and said he had seen it.  I think a lot of it is just people throwing stuff at the wall so that when it eventually does happen they can say they were right.

There a big difference between Lego brand retail shop employees and those employed by Lego corporate with regard to insider knowledge. @KingDave was referring to the latter given his word choice and that lends credibility to it.

There have been enough hints and such dropped the last few months by numerous folk with a track record of being right about these sorts of things that I fully expect to see a new Falcon this Fall.

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who heard about the new UCS Falcon at the local Lego Store last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

    (@KingDave....really hoping you're right.....)

Is that not the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer?..if it is i had a big thing for that girl when i was younger...ding dong..

I think Lego is looking for a guaranteed slam dunk after the recent UCS failures.  A newly designed MF or remake of the original are both likely to be hugely successful.  They've been remaking other iconic ships like the X-Wing and the Snowspeeder, why not the most iconic of them all?

I'm not saying I've heard the rumors or know anything, just stating that it would make perfect sense.

Yes. This is the same woman who played the original (movie) Buffy, not to be confused with the more famous TV series Buffy, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar

I'd expect the MISB 10179 UCS Falcons won't take much of a hit when the next one eventually gets released, but will crush the resale value of opened ones.

I read on Brickset that an employee of Lego said it was officially confirmed.

Considering it takes years to get an Ideas set to market...

Which UCS failures?  Slave 1? Sandcrawler?  We all universally dislike the Hoth set, but it sells.  There was a sales limit on Slave 1 for the first three months due to the demand.

You'd actually have a better argument that the original UCS MF was a failure due to the size and lack of consumer market for a $499.99 set in 2007.

The GBHQ and Castle would seem to indicate that there is a $300.00+ market out there, but I wouldn't put my money on a new UCS MF being a 'slam dunk.'

After the new version of the Death Star I think the Falcon UCS re-tooled was just a matter of time. TLG don't like re-sellers, but more than that they really don't like re-sellers who gorge fans for prices #10179 have been going for. Doing a new version will let all the air out of that bubble, which is a win win for TLG and the fans.

Nope, that would be the Snowspeeder, the second UCS is normally later in the year.

I'm hoping the the snowspeeder is just a smoke-screen for a 4th of May release of a USC Falcon. Wouldn't that be a real coup for Lego to be able to keep something that big under wraps until release date?

As others have said, I think that a new USC Falcon is inevitable and I'm guessing that the price would be in the $600.00 range.

I'm hoping it will be more like US$500, leading to a AU$750 price tag, as if it's US$600, it could go as high as $1,000 for us...

Have TLG done a bait & switch with a big set announcement like this before? I only just bought #70751 & #75060, I'd like to give my saving account a bit more recovery time as I already still need to get #75827, #21128 & #10255. Personally I could happily wait for it until the second UCS release date, so I can use my tax return for the Falcon.

^ For the umpteenth time on this forum, someone has expressed an opinion... Granted, their opinion is based on flawed logic, but then again, no more so than your own.
TLG DOES care about resellers and what they do. TLG has an absolute hard on for resellers!  They DO care about a set that has LONG since been retired goes for what it goes for.  I won't say 'They just do', I'll explain why - Market perception.  ANY company would kill for the market perception that TLG carries.  At present, this product can withstand consistent price increases whilst providing an (apparently) consistent drop in both actual product quality, quality assurance and base manufacturing cost while staving off inroads by competitors whose product quality is MASSIVELY improving.  Add to this the often reported and upheld by General public opinion fact that their product is a more sensible long term investment than gold or cash (albeit false) and you've got a marketers wet dream.
Anyone who thinks that TLG don't LOVE what happens in the reselling market is living in fairy land.

Lego have probably sold many, many sets on the back of stories saying put a lego set away for 10 years and it is worth 10x what you paid for it.
