Storage of Unopened Sets

What is everyone's recommendations for storage of large unopened sets?

I have several large sets (Tower Bridge, Parisian Restaurant, Palace Cinema, etc.) that I don't anticipate assembling for several months. They are currently stored in a closet, but I was wondering if they should be stored flat, horizontal, vertical or what. Does it really matter?

Thanks for any insight.

You will find tons of different threads on here dedicated to this very question.  Others more savvy than I will likely link you to them.

However, high level I would say store them veritical and try not to stack any on top of one another. Ideally on a shelf where they won't be bumped or anything.

For large sets, the weight of the contents are inevitably going to cause the cardboard to bow outward. If that's a concern, you'll want to store them in a way that this behavior is met with resistance. The most effective method would be to package them snugly in outer boxes and that's the reason that I try to seek out the LEGO shipping boxes that stores discard.

If you are going to open them anyway, it doesn't really matter. I'd actually open them now - especially any with stickers - and get replacement sticker sheets if they are creased while they are available.

Same if you have any licensed ones with minifigures that might be difficult to replace if damaged. I recently opened a Helm's Deep and Theoden's torso print was damaged. I asked for a replacement through Lego and got told that this is a retired set and they don't have any more stocks of them. From the numbers some sellers have on BL, it looks like LEGO has sold them all off.
